The last one and a half years was an extremely busy time for me and my husband. We had 3 major celebrations within a span of a year. Yes, you have read it right. 3 functions in a year, and it was one hell of a busy year! We had our engagement in Singapore on the 3th Jan 2010, our ROM ceremony in Perth on 2^nd October 2010 and our traditional Sikh wedding in Singapore on 9^th Jan 2011.

Both our immediate families had moved to Perth about 7 years ago, with our relatives still back in Singapore. And that was a reason as to why we had functions in both countries.

Once the dates were set, and the temples booked, the first thing that came to mind was a trip to India. My mum, aunt and I went to India (New Delhi) in September 2009 for a week. We were out of the hotel shopping from the time the shops opened all the way till they closed. We amazingly managed to get everything from my outfits for my engagement, temple wedding and dinner reception to all the matching accessories that i needed from head to toe, which includes my handbags and shoes too! You are basically spoilt for choice in India, with the number of shops there are, not to mention the number of different designs and colours that each shop carried. We also did shopping for all the other necessities that were required for a Sikh wedding. A trip to India was definitely worth it and it was really helpful too knowing that everything we needed for the wedding was bought especially since we live in Perth and were having the wedding in Singapore.

Knowing that we live miles away from the destination of our wedding, and also having to plan one wedding in Singapore and one in Perth which were 3 months apart, i knew we needed to get started on planning our wedding as soon as our engagement was over. Having a wedding planner was not even an option, as we wanted to plan our dream wedding ourselves. This definitely allowed us to do our homework and source out prices from a variety of providers. With work commitments that we had here in Perth, flying down to Singapore to plan the wedding was not easy. And my best friend during the planning stage was no other than the internet. The Singapore Indian Brides website was a regularly used website during our planning too. Being well organised and having everything booked earlier did definitely take the stress away from us, especially during the months leading up to the wedding.

Just a little bit about the Perth ceremony. The ROM ceremony that we had in Perth was a small one compared to our wedding in Singapore. Although it was just a small affair with 150 guests, planning it still did take time as the concept we had for this wedding was of a more modern touch, with me being able to wear a wedding gown. My dream was to always have a outdoor wedding ceremony by the river, with the beautiful scenery as the background and i had my dream come true. There were still a lot of things to consider like food, photographer, decoration etc and we started out by creating a budget for the Perth wedding, this was especially so for we had taken the ROM ceremony squarely on our shoulders. The budget was a really good thing that we had as we constantly looked back to it as a benchmark compared to what we were paying for each provider, and we did well with spending within our budget. The weather turned out perfect on that day, and the simple decoration that we had such as seat covers with sashes, a cream carpet in the aisle with rose petals scattered on both sides as well as a marquee, all of which just blended in beautifully with the wonderful river background. As most of you would probably know, we have awesome beaches and parks here in Australia, and we decided to take advantage of this fact and did our wedding photo-shoot here in Perth totally outdoors, instead of the normal studio pictures that many seem to do in Singapore. We thought it would be something different and the best part of it, it would be real backdrop sceneries.

And so, over the year, planning for the wedding continued. It was something that had to be done constantly throughout the year, but my advice to future brides is to start your planning early. There is no better feeling and also a lot of stress is reduced if the wedding is well planned and organised. I was only going back to Singapore 2 weeks before my wedding and that was a big push that made me have everything organised way before that.

In terms of people or providers that i used during our wedding, my hair and make up artist was Bubbly from Looks Beauty Parlour. To me having a good hair and make up artist was a really important factor for my wedding. For me, how you are going to look and present yourself during your wedding is one of the most important aspects to the wedding. You do not want to look your everyday self, rather stand out and aim to make everyone speechless when you first walk in. Bubbly, to me was awesome. I had heard so many good reviews and recommendations from people about her work. I made a trip back to Singapore in June 2010, and that was when i did my trial with her. And the next time i met her was only a week before my wedding, where she went through everything with me again. She sits down with you and makes sure that you are prepared in terms of accessories etc for your wedding and gives you feedback on what she thinks will look good on you. I felt so at ease having her as my beautician, i never worried about anything at all, as i had the confidence in her and knew that she would make me look spectacular on my wedding day. I wore a lengha for my temple wedding, with a heavy fully embroidered scarf and i knew i really needed someone who could tie my scarf for me really well as i am of a small built, and Bubbly once again has exceptional scarf typing skills. I have no idea how she did it, but i did not feel the weight of the scarf on me at all, and she tied it in such a way that my hands could move freely. I would like to emphasize on this aspect again, as Sikh brides we have our head covered with our scarf for close to 8 hrs on our wedding day, and no one to me could have done a better job.

As for our photographer, we used Dave from Picture Perfect. We immediately made our decision to book him as we knew that being a Sikh himself, he knew every aspect of a Sikh wedding and would know how certain customs or traditions are important to us and would capture those moments. That too really helped us as we did not have the time to search and meet up with other photographers due to the distance apart. My husband’s god-brother Habib from Hart Photography also took a number of photographs on his own accord for us, and his photographs were also stunning.

However, with our videographer, we found it harder to make a decision on who to use. Not being in Singapore, it was hard for us to see sample videos of their work as not many of them have samples online. And we wanted a good videographer as it will be the only memories left in years to come of your wedding, and as weddings happen once in a lifetime, you do not want to regret making a wrong choice. In our initial decision making for videographers, we basically researched on videographers by asking around on what people thought about each particular videographer. I would not recommend this at all. Every couple has different views on what a good videographer is, and i highly recommend watching sample videos for yourself before making a decision. As there are quite a number of Singaporeans here in Perth, we managed to get copies of previously filmed weddings by videographers and used that to make our decision. We went ahead with a company called Maan Vision from Kuala Lumpur. You would be thinking why would we take a company from Malaysia? Well, to us, the quality and the style that they filmed their weddings were just breathtaking. You can watch some of their sample work on You Tube under Maan Vision. The best part of it is that we get 2 videographers which was a big plus point. I always wanted myself getting ready on the wedding day to be filmed, and the advantage of having 2 videographers just made it possible. I had one videographer to myself and so did my husband. Simply awesome!

Our decorator was Vanan from Pandora tomorrow. It was really easy dealing with him too especially since he was a friend of my husbands. We have seen his work before and knew his standards and quality of work. For our Sangeet, we chose the colours we wanted and left the stage deco design to him, and trust me he did a good job. My husband’s side also used his services too for our wedding dinner at the Singapore Swimming Club.

We wanted to do something different for our first dance and also to do a small little performance as a way of saying thank you to every single family member and friend who has helped us so much during our wedding. And that was what we did at our wedding reception, which caught many of our guests by surprise.

The wedding went on just as it was planned. Everything turned out beautiful and amazing just as we wanted. And then you realise that the wedding has come to an end. You then realise and appreciate the amount of help and effort that your family members and loved ones have put in, to make the wedding possible, especially with a Sikh wedding where you have numerous functions over a few days, which can be quite stressful for the parents too. And now as my husband and me look back at those few busy days we had, we knew that every effort that we have put in has truly paid off. We had everything we dreamt of, and we can proudly say that if we ever had to re-do our wedding again, there will not be one thing that we would like changed at all, as to us we had the most perfect wedding we can ever ask for.

Our Bride of the Month!

As I shed light on my bridal journey, I never fail to realize the wonderful effort put in by my family and friends in making my dream wedding possible. Preparations had started months before the big day especially since Dev’s (my husband) family from Australia was being hosted for the wedding period in my home country, Singapore. My dearest mother had taken a huge amount of responsibilities on herself. She was my greatest pillar of strength throughout the wedding preparations and ensured that everything was in perfect order, even the tiniest details that I would have probably overlooked myself. My mother never had great photos at her wedding and that was something she always regretted, therefore at my wedding she made sure she hired excellent photographers that were flown in from India. My make-up and hair was done by Mrignaina (www.mrignanina.com), a high profile Indian make-up artist, who thankfully managed to squeeze time for my wedding. She had incredibly miraculous hands that concealed all the wedding stress off my face and transformed me into the bridal image I had always imagined. She took profound care into giving me a different look for every function and most of all made me feel comfortable and at ease amidst the wedding clamour. The rest of my family from Singapore and abroad, especially my dad, uncles and aunts, cousins (Puja, Dimple, Sheetal, Karishma and Bina) ensured that the arrangements and décor for each function was meticulously planned. They even got together every Sunday to rehearse for their dance performance at the sangeet, which was extremely endearing. My closest friends played a tremendous role in making my sangeet an incredibly remarkable experience for me. My closest friends, Muneezay, Sonia, Sandhya and Harleen flew down from overseas and together with Mahima, Shania, Roohi, Nirav, Juweiriah, Sidra, Hanita and KP, they took charge of the entire sangeet program with impressive moves that left all the guests enjoying the wedding thoroughly. However, the biggest surprise at the sangeet was from Dev’s family. In the years I had dated Dev, I never realized the “hidden” bhangra dancer that he remarkably revealed at the sangeet. He and his brothers performed flawlessly to a bhangra number that left the audience captivated and seriously wondering if these boys had indeed been brought up in Australia. My lovely in-laws also did the most adorable dance and left us inspired to be exactly in love as they are even thirty years into their marriage.

On my wedding day, as I walked through the Ritz Carlton, I could not believe that everything I had always envisioned to be part of my dream wedding was indeed coming true. I had wanted my wedding to have a “Radha-Krishna” theme as this reflects the sanctity and devotion of true love. I can still remember the feeling of exhilaration that I experienced as I walked through the beautiful garden and a pond that overlooked an immensely divine statue of Radha-Krisha that was set up in the ballroom. The mandap (dias) was designed with red and white flowers and kaleere (gold ornaments which are tied on the bride’s bangles). On Dev’s side, his family made all the preparations necessary for a grand wedding entrance. His family tried to organize for a horse which Dev could arrive in, which is a traditional and popular practice in Hindu weddings. This however, could not materialize due a plague that resulted in all the horses in Singapore to be quarantined. Nevertheless, his family ushered their extravagant entrance for the wedding in Ritz Carlton Hotel with a huge adrenalin-pumping crowd of family and friends, united in singing and dancing ecstatically to the music. It was truly a night to remember!

During the doli/vidaai (post-wedding ritual) ceremony, it finally dawned upon me that the wedding was coming to an end. It was a very emotional moment but it truly made me realize and be grateful for my family and friends. As all you beautiful brides embark on this magical journey of marriage, I ask you to appreciate the people who are closest to you in life. The wedding gets over even before you know it, but memories of the priceless relationship that you have with your dear ones, live on forever.

After the wedding, Dev’s family had also arranged a grandiose reception in the distinguished Plaza ballroom in Melbourne, Australia. The ballroom, with its stunning Spanish Rococo architecture, was breathtaking and my in-laws had arranged for dim lighting together with the silver and lavender theme, which added to the effect. My brother in-laws were the hosts of the evening and they ensured that everyone had a great time. Dev’s best friend, aakash, and both our parents gave heartfelt speeches that left a tear in our eye. Indeed, the wedding left behind a truly phenomenal print in my mind with the combined efforts of my nearest and dearest.

We were introduced by my best friend, Sivanesan. Within 3 days, my husband expressed his feelings for me with a big bouquet of roses and asked “Will u marry me?” His willingness to share everything with me made me realise that sharing was important. Sharing is caring proved to be a mantra in our relationship.

He faced obstacles in trying to marry me. He had proposed many times but I had always declined.I was worried about my family and other things. However he never gave up. On 26.11.2009 he surprised me. He drove all the way from Singapore to Ipoh to meet my mother .I knew he was genuine and I finally accepted his proposal. Our engagement took place on 17^th January 2010 and our Wedding on the 29^th. We had our ROM / Wedding reception in Singapore on 12^th June 2010 .

The wedding proceedings were done in a traditional Hindu Wedding style, in a beautiful temple, at an auspicious time at a Grand Wedding Hall. About 700 to 800 total of guests attended the wedding and reception was held in Ipoh and Singapore respectively. There was a huge crowd and we were showered with blessings.

Our wedding preparations were well done. My wedding planner was my husband, my mum, 3 sisters and ‘attachi’. My make up, bridal accessories and henna were done by Malar Bridal at Malar Beauty Gallery. Center 55 Photo & Muthu photography preserved the magical moments with their lens. We were satisfied with the arrangement and preparations. GOD’S grace and the aura of peace that surrounded us that day made it special indeed.

My advice to brides:

“ Plan everything carefully and work out a budget and most important stick to it. Planning a wedding can place a lot of stress in your relationship .However try to make the best out of it,learn about each other and cherish the moment ! Patience and love are important throughout wedding preparation! ”

Our Bride of the Month!

Parvin's Sikh wedding with unique touches, ambigrams and fun photo booths for the guests too!

It is always said that destiny brings two people together and its probably true in our case. Kelvin and I were in the same Punjabi school (primary) and secondary school (Yio Chu Kang Secondary School). We were just acquaintances then and only greeted each other when absolutely necessary. We moved on with our lives and our paths crossed again in NYP. We went on our first date after getting to know each other over SMSes after approximately five months. I had to move to Sydney for a year to complete my Bachelors Degree. He then moved on to Perth to complete his Bachelors Degree when I got back. Being in a long distance relationship was tough but we overcame the odds and got engaged on the 20^th July 2008. Our wedding date was then set for 10^th July 2010.

I had a vision of having a unique wedding. I didn’t need a grand and an expensive wedding. I just wanted it to be unique. I wanted it to be different and be remembered by my guests. My wedding preparation started with a shopping trip in Ludhiana and Amritsar, Punjab accompanied by my father’s sisters. Just like any other woman, the bridal outfit was the most important item. I did not want to be wearing red despite it being a ‘traditional wedding color’. I went around countless of shops but only found the perfect outfit on the last leg of the trip. I got what I wanted – UNIQUE. Once that was settled, I had to tackle another part of the whole outfit. A Punjabi wedding is not complete without the churah. I saw many ordinary churahs but didn’t like any. I wanted it to be customized based on what I liked. I had Vinod, from Amba Ji design my churah set.He had not done anything like that before and was therefore a bit hesitant to take my order. I was speechless when I eventually saw the final piece.

My husband’s outfit was also purchased in India along with traditional items like his Sehra. He made a trip down to Bangkok to tailor the suit he was going to wear for the reception.Once the venues were decided upon, we had to look for a suitable decorator. I did a lot of scouting as I had a budget to stick to. I met up with a couple of decorators but was only satisfied with Ramesh from Azen Decorators.

Kelvin and I created our very own ambigram using our initials. We used them on the invites, decoration signs and even our rings. Our guests were very amazed by the idea and found it very special.To capture our moment, we hired Dave(photographer) and Moses (videographer).

For our wedding reception, we had rendered the services of ‘Baicapture Photo Booth’. They took candid pictures of guests with all sorts of props. The pictures were then complied into a guest book as a keepsake for both me and Kelvin. Our guests also had their own copy of the pictures. This formed the first portion of the wedding favours.Our wedding cake was customized and had a henna theme.

The weekend arrived and before we knew it, it was over with a blink of an eye. We had our dream wedding, which turned out to be a grand affair. As we look back at all the cherished moments, we know it would not have been possible, without the help of family, relatives and friends who unselfishly gave us their time.

Destination wedding.

The type of wedding that is getting pretty popular amongst couples nowadays. What is there not to like? They are away from our hometown, fewer guests involved, making it a more intimate and casual affair rather than a traditional style formal wedding, where there are people present whom you don’t even know. That is the first thing that was on mine and my husband to be’s mind when were deciding where to get married. The choice was between Bali, Indonesia or Phuket, Thailand. We ended up choosing Phuket partly because it is a compromise of distance between India & Singapore, the two cities from where most of our guests would come from. Plus, since working in the States for so many years, Akshay & I have been away from family for quite long and we felt a destination wedding would be a great place to bond with family and friends.

Work Work Work

As soon as Akshay went back to work to Canada after the Roka in Jan, I started my new project: Wedding Planning. I was not working at the time and was back in Singapore from being in L.A. for last 6 years and since I was given most of the responsibility to plan for my wedding, I took it happily as my full time job! There were so many things to do in a short span of 4 months. I created a wedding website www.akshaykirti.com and used wedshare.com as my wedding planning tool. I followed the checklist that it provided and was amazed to know that it’s not that simple to hold a destination wedding as we thought we did. Even though it has its pros, it has its cons too. We realised we definitely needed the help of a professional wedding planner to coordinate the wedding in a seamless way. Eventhough I finally found one from Bangkok, I still had to do most of the ground work for the next 4 months.

I also found that most of the recommended vendors were from Bangkok, hence I had to look for and coordinate with my wedding planner on all the neccessary things and people needed to make the wedding in Phuket an amazing experience. We had to transport the Photographers, our personal Hair Salon team, the props and flower team etc. The other issues to deal with were letting everyone know to get their visas on time, the flight bookings, other recommended hotels that they could stay at. My family and I made 2 trips to Phuket to settle all matters such as the hotel, functions areas, the food tastings, along with the wedding planners as well. There were so many hotels but we finally found the JW Marriott Hotel and Spa to be absolutely perfect for my wedding. It was near the airport, had a enough rooms to accommodate everyone and lastly was right on the beach.

This made my life so much easier while trying to coordinate everything since I could just look at my wedding at a glance down a computer page. All my work finally ended few days before it was time to head to "Marry" land. I could finally close the big wedding binder I created.

June 1st - Puja function in Singapore

My parents invited all the people who could and could not make it to the wedding in Phuket. This way, those who couldn't made their respects and blessed the couple. It was a day full of prayers, dancing and food.

Prefunctions

The plan was to have a 3 day wedding on a weekend so that guests could make it without having to take too many days off.

Some of us went to Phuket earlier by 2 days so that we could settle in and bond. I was told by my wedding planner and sisters that the minute I get into the hotel, I clean my hands off anything to do with the wedding except to enjoy myself. My sisters and aunt got there earlier so that they could work with the wedding planner to make sure that everything was on track and see to it that the guests were well taken care of. Akshay & I had planned to do our wedding photoshoot and to spend quality time with our selective friends and cousins during the first 2 days prior to wedding functions.The photoshoot was the biggest highlight for me, was super fun and amazing and I felt like a star! We were on location at the JW Marriott Hotel premises and we modeled in the lobby, pool and beach. The sunsets were amazing. I got to wear a white bridal gown and some of the dresses I designed myself. The days went by so fast and it seemed all I did was wake up, put on my make up and outfits, rushed to the functions areas and smiled till my jaws hurt. Luckily I got to have a Thai massage on 2 of the days which relaxed me and reduced the anxiety I was having from the wedding functions and rushing around.

Day One - Fri 4th June 2010 - Mehndi & Sangeet Nite

Mehndi

The mehndi was in the afternoon and I was panicking as everything was running late. One of the Silk Air flights with all the VIP guests got delayed , my make up artist was delayed and all I could think of was how the night was going to be delayed too.

Finally, I was in the mehndi room and was amazed at how the decorators excecuted the Sunflower theme I requested for. The room was so prettily decorated, having orange, pink and gold fabric flowing all over the room ceiling with large sunflower stands around the room.. While I was getting my hands adorned by beautiful mehndi designs, everyone else also got theirs done by the mehndi ladies from Bangkok. There was a manucurist and Nail art expert in the team who became a big hit with the gals. Most were eager to finish doing their mehndi as soon as possible so that they would have enough time to get ready for the Sangeet Nite function which was only 3 hours away. I was surprised at Akshay's entrance as he danced his way into the room chewing his gum without even realising it. I was trying not to laugh too hard but couldn't contain it. I remember thinking, my hubby to be dances really well!

Sangeet

I was in love with the Sangeet lengha that my mother-n-law had gotten for me from Bombay designer Tarana Masand, who designs gorgeous collections. It went with the Tiffany, Starry Nite theme. My entrance into the ballroom was with my dad to the song called "MY GIRL" by The Temptations. I was gleeming that day and was proud to walk with my father as I'm sure he was too. Akshay & I had the Engagement Ring Ceremony which included cutting of the gorgeous Tiffany-colored cake and cupcakes that I had chosen. We then took off to our beautiful Bride and Groom seating area. The theme for the night was "Starry Nite". Everything was silvery, white, with blue and pink accents all over the room. There was flowing fabric surrounding the seating area, Tiffany colored table runners matching the white candles, flowers and furniture. The room was absolutely beautiful as I had envisioned. The Bangkok photography team's package included a photobooth where guests could take photos of themselves and their families and take home those treasured memories.

The performances for the nite were spectacular and no wonder my family is called the Music & Dance family.

We also had Vikas Bhalla from Mumbai and my cousin Ishaan from Los Angeles in the house who sang some awesome songs. The dance floor finally opened after dinner and everyone dashed to it and danced like they never danced before in their lives. All that alcohol must have helped! The night ended at 6am in the morning with many youngsters (and some parents) trickling out of the ballroom and finding their ways back to their rooms. It was time to get those few hours of beauty sleep.

Day Two - Sat 5th June 2010

I had a hard time waking up especially since I had only about 4 hours of sleep (very bad indeed). All I remember is someone coming into my room and forcing me out of bed.Thank god I had to be simply dressed and did not have to put much make up on for the morning.

I've always had to do it for others and now it was my turn for my hands to be heavy with gold ornaments and later my face to be smeared with a paste that is apparently suppose to clean and scub your skin to get a glowing look after.

I felt bad for Akshay since he had to get up slightly earlier than I to do the Ganesh Puja in his parent's suite on the other end of the wing in the hotel. Judgin by the photos, we did look pretty dead tired. I managed to sleep a little in the afternoon but had to eventually wake up and dress again for the wedding function! Yes, it was one thing after another!

Break time

It rained a little in the morning but by afternoon the sun came out and some of the youngsters were lounging around the pool chairs in their bikinis and shorts, some sipping mohitos by the pool bar and few were actually swimming. I wished I had some extra time to relax outside but I guess being the bride, I had too many things to do to be ready on time for the wedding. yea I tried my best not to follow any IST (Indian Standard timing)

Wedding

It was 530pm.The photographers came into my room and eagerly started taking photos of me and my wedding lengha while getting my make up done. The Barat procession and the wedding ceremony was at the Lotus Pavilion which was on the ground floor of the hotel next to the Lotus Pond, poolside and beach right when the sun was setting. The lotus pond was the highlight of the hotel as it featured a row of big lotuses with fire coming out of it, making the entire longated pond reflect light which illuminated the entire area.

After the wedding function was over, it was time to head to the Ballroom again for the Reception.I headed back to my suite and changed to a Red Sari which was the 3rd outfit for the day.

We had our first dance, poured the champaign, cut the cake and took photos with all the guests on the stage. The highlight of the reception was the Doli and the dance floor. The doli usually happens after a couple leaves from their wedding to go back home and everyone starts crying and is sad. My doli was awesome. We had no where to go, rented a car just for the sake of it (mom's idea) and drove around for about 5 minutes and came back to the hotel. Everyone pretended to cry but couldnt help but laugh. It was hilarious.

It was time to get back and join the rest on the dance floor in the ballroom. The night had JUST started and this time, everyone was back even harder than the night before. It was only 7am that the dance floor finally ended and everyone came out and rushed back into their rooms to get some precious sleep before their flight back home. Definitely a weekend to remember!

Akshay & I spent our honeymoon in Thailand itself since we were already there and this was the best decision we made since we did not want to travel around too much after the exhaustion from the wedding. Hence, Destination wedddings do double up as honeymoons as well! Besides Phuket, we stayed at Krabi and did the Phi Phi Island Tour which is highly recommended.

Good things have to come to an end...

Now, as I look back toward the full experience of a destination wedding and how it went by so fast, I could do it all over again! I can truly say that I had my dream wedding which I wished and planned for. I learnt alot about weddings in general in a span of 4 months and it has truly inspired me to start a chic clothing and accessories line for Summer & Fall 2011. I plan on having a Photography Event company in the near future as well which will focus on fashion and wedding photoshoots with my line of dresses, outfits, shoes & accessories for you to rent or own. I am temporarily residing in Canada working on my label and I also freelance as a passionate e-wedding planner & a theme/collage expert. We met through a chat line 8 years ago and went on to the same institute. We became close buddies then lovers. We took our marriage vows after 8 years on 19 June 2010. To spend the rest of the life with someone whom adores and love you deeply is every girl’s dream, that was my only dream too. He was the hero in my life who swept me off my feet.

Our wedding groundwork started 7 months back; my hubby and I were the wedding planners. As our wedding was split onto two different days, we had double preparations. 17 June was our temple customary wedding and 19 June was my Solemnization cum wedding reception.

We started with my bridal photoshoot in JB Taman sentosa, the same bridal shop which my Sister engaged for her own wedding .For my customary wedding , I wanted to get my favorite colour, a purple sari and purple sherwani for my hubby. I got my sari and we used LIBAS for my hubby’s tailor-made purple and off white sherwani. The make up artist I engaged was a freelance makeup artist.

We started off with browsing for Malay decorators for my wedding reception that caught our eye but none gave us a reasonable price. After much consideration we decided to engage Shaabaz events and management.

For make up I was actually fixated on Malay bridal makeup, I think they were doing really perfect makeup for the brides. After much contemplation, I engaged a make up artist from Ratu wedding, I particularly engaged this makeup artist as she was familiar with Indian skin tone.

I wanted a peach designer sari but could not get the colour I wanted. I went shopping with my mum and cousin and went up and down all the shops. Finally I got the colour I wanted at V2 creations. We browsed through Tanjong pagar bridal shops to find the perfect pink champagne suit which matched my pink and turquoise sari. Recommended by my bro-in-law Engaged Mediawave entertainment for DJ and MC was GT.Food was ordered from freelance Raja’s catering.

My wedding day more special for me as it was also my parents wedding anniversary. I planned a surprised cake cutting for my parents and we had loads of fun. 19 June was the happiest moment in my life, tying the knot to a person who loves me truly and sincerely.I am blessed to be married and it is just the beginning.

The thing about weddings is that you spend days, weeks and months planning it to perfection, only to savor the few days that they last. During my wedding, I was wide-eyed every single moment, eating and sleeping little so as to not miss out on anything. Hence the purpose of photographers- to immortalize every minute of life's most significant event.

Everything was more than worth it. My wedding was simple, elegant, musical and blissful. It was an eruption of colors and melodies in joyous celebration. At the Sangeet, we first introduced my Maharastrain in-laws to the Punjabi affinity towards dancing, dancing and dancing. Despite being the bride, I wore a suit instead of a sari or lehnga so I could dance uninhibitedly. The next day was a day of rest for everyone, except for me and my immediate family. We were sleepless in anticipation, counting down the seconds.

In the morning of Sunday, 20 Dec 2008, I put on my bridal lehnga. It was glittery and gorgeous, light but giving the illusion of being heavy. The net veil gave a nice and subtle hint of my elaborate hairdo. When the car pulled into the temple, there were about 50 people at its entrance to welcome me. Then my cousins ushered to the mandap, where the ceremony was going to be held. A classical number filled the audiotrium as I walked towards my husband-to-be. The mandap was beautifully decorated with rose and jasmine flowers. There was love all around.

The ceremony was anything but solemn. Our panditji was casual and light-hearted, making sure to translate key phrases for non-Hindi speakers. Good humor marked most of the ceremony; sometimes the panditji would make Dev promise not to "go to gardens with drunk friends" and other times he would ask me to slow down as I raced to complete the "pheras" and be... married. It was hilarious, and it was needed. The bonhomie was needed to make things less serious.

Lunch followed. And then it was time for my dreaded "bidhai". It was a flurry of tears; I wasn't just leaving my home, I was about to leave Singapore to go to the other side of the world- America. It was hence especially painful in my case. I wasn't going to have to good fortune of driving down to block to see my folks. It had to be a 19 hour plane ride.But this stone cold fact didn't stop me from living up what was to come that very evening- the reception. I wore a gorgeous orange lehnga with a gold corsette. Dev and I practised our Viennese waltz moves in our bridal suite while guests slowly filled up the hall downstairs. When we made our grand entrance, all I could see were bright lights and smiles. The hall in Sheraton was absolutely beautiful. Chandliers, roses and a soft scent epitomized it. The program began.

Some people gave poignant speeches, some gave humourous speeches and some danced. Dev and I danced and spoke a few words in thanksgiving too. Dev also sang and played "I'm yours" by Jason Mraz on the guitar. I was so incredibly proud of him; he was so talented and he wasn't afraid to express his love, and he was all mine!

I thoroughly enjoyed all the performances, even mine despite a couple of missteps we made during the waltz. But it was my day and I could do anything. My friends performed a medley of different songs- from "Khwab Dekhe" to "Yeh Ishq Hai". But when it came to "Desi Girl", to give me a cute, mischievous surprise, they started pointing at Dev, who raced up the stage and did his moves. Suddenly all fingers were pointing at me; I had to go up and sway along unrehearsed. And I did.

The program ended with professional dancers entering the hall and bhangra-ing with a dhol. They danced furiously for 15 minutes, literally transmitting their energy to the 250 people in the audience. That was a perfect segway to the dance floor. The party started.

It was, undeniably, my dream wedding. There's nothing more I could have wished for and nothing I wish I had not done. I have my family- Mom, Dad, sis, grandparents- and my lovely girlfriends to thank.

It’s every girl’s dream to have a perfect wedding. Here it goes: my husband and I got engaged in July 2009 and we set 14 March 2010 as our wedding date. With just a few months to prepare for the wedding, I made a trip to India after our engagement to do my bridal shopping. The trip was a well worth one with the overflowing variety of clothes, accessories etc available there. I was definitely spoilt for choice.

Once I came back from India we set down to preparing for our wedding. The Singapore Brides website as well as the Singapore Indian Brides website proved to be very useful in my search for the many vendors we required for our wedding. I got a lot of contacts from many other helpful brides in these websites’ forums. With all the information gathered, my husband and I eventually decided on whose services we would be using for our wedding. Obviously it was a tedious process but an enjoyable experience to cherish for both of us.

As the day was drawing closer, like any other bride, I was getting cold feet. A piece of good advise to heed for the big day; sleep early and leave any tiny details to your loved ones! My husband and I are very grateful to our family, relatives and friends for all the support and help they provided to us before and on the wedding day. Words can’t sum up how memorable this special day had been for us. We present our heartfelt and sincere thanks to everyone who played a part to make our wedding a truly special one for us.

So how’s married life now? Like the old jokes go love is blind and marriage is an eye-opener. Well happy to say for those waiting to take the plunge, this eye opener has been a great one thus far and we have to agree with our personal vows below:

The perfect wedding,,,It's has always been every girls dream and being the very stereotypical girly girl it was mine too. My husband and I got engaged on the 27th of January 2008, and the minute the ring was on my finger talk about the wedding begun. Wanting to soak in the feeling of being engaged, we decided to put setting a date on hold and start planning the perfect wedding. Nearly, a year later we finally decided that enough homework had been done and we were now ready to start setting a date and toyed around with many in December. A Christmas wedding was never in the picture but as we thought long and hard about leave from work and friends & family coming from all over Malaysia, Singapore and Australia, it became apparent that a public holiday might just satisfy all requirements.

Once the date was set for the 25th of December it all began. My husband and I took the first flight out to India and the next thing we knew we were haggling prices with shop owners in Chaura Bazaar, located in a town called Ludhiana in Punjab. It's amazing how we managed to complete all our wedding shopping in the span of a week, having said that being at the shops from the break of dawn till they shut for the day after sunset did take its toll on us and we didn't return to Malaysia the healthiest of people, but thinking back it was worth every bit of it. Shortly after my trip to India, I started my new job back in Sydney, Australia and left all the research and contact details I'd accumulated over the course of my wedding research in the trusted hands of my mum, dad and husband. My husband had a difficult arrangement as well as he was working in Singapore, so the only errands he could run were on his weekend trips back to KL, Malaysia. Thank god for the internet and e-business or the wedding I had all planned like a bollywood song and dance sequence in my head would not have been possible. I spent much of my spare time at work communicating with many service providers via email enquiring about every detail of their services and prices.

Once I'd short listed a few I'd communicate the information to my husband who would meet with a number of these people and give me feedback on their samples(something that's a little difficult to do when you're in a different country!). We would then proceed to make decisions and book their services for the Christmas week(what we discovered to be the busiest week for most businesses directly related to events, from catering to videography). Being a Sikh Punjabi, our weddings are usually a week long and consist of many pre-wedding ceremonies (hosted by the girls side and is exclusively for the girls family and friends), the wedding day and then a dinner and thanksgiving prayers hosted by the boys side. The catering, venues, guestlists and invitations were left up to my parents, and what a wonderful job they did. We had a variety of dishes throughout the wedding week, which left the guests highly contented. The venues were perfect for the crowds we accommodated and no-one was left out of the guestlist, it was simply right.

My sister handled the entertainment perspective of the girl-side events and put on some wonderful performances with the help of my cousins and friends. The music was just the sort I love, a mix of current and dated bollywood, bhangra and RNB tunes were a hit at the end of every event when the dance floor opened and everyone let loose! My wedding day flowers were arranged by my dads best friend and his family, and they were simply spectacular.
With the help and tremendous support of my family and friends I was strangely calm leading up to the wedding week. On the morning of the wedding, knowing that everything had been taken care of I was left with nothing to worry about and this accounted for the fantastic time i had on the biggest day of my life.

I had the perfect dress, make-up, flowers, car , family and husband to be, nothing was amiss. As I walked down the aisle of the Sikh temple that morning I knew this was exactly where I wanted to be and the smiles radiating on everyone's faces was just proof of the fact that my dream had come true at last!

The following day the wedding dinner was just perfect and I was swept off my feet once again by the boy I'd met 6 years ago. There was love in everything that made up that evening, in every detail there was so much thought and preparation and I was speechless. What could I say he had done it again! It was indeed a memorable night with lots of food, talk, laughter and love.

When everything was over, we had all forgotten about the tiredness and stress in organising and living the wedding week and were eager to do it all over again. Looking back now it was definitely the most wonderful week of my life till date and I wouldn’t change a thing. It was indeed a fairytale wedding with the Happily ever after!

Just 15 minutes after he popped the question and I said yes… the only thing that came to my mind and got me all excited was… I have to start planning for the wedding! ! It was a grand start to a wonderful wedding. My hubby ,Mark planned an elaborate proposal. It was at the Dolphin Lagoon in front of what seemed like 200 people! A baby pink dolphin – a creature I adore the most – swam up to me with a cooler box hanging on its rostrum. Suddenly romantic music was playing. He picked it up, opened it, and there it was… bedded in red roses… my diamond ring! Of course I had to say yes!

After I got over the initial surprise, tears, laughter and slight embarrassment since strangers were coming up to me to congratulate me,I knew I had lots of work to do.I needed to plan the perfect wedding! And it was going to take lots of energy and expert researching skills.
We had planned to have our ROM first and to have our traditional temple wedding 2 years later. We wanted a unique ROM, a celebration of our years together.

To kick-start the planning process, I found it very useful to draw up a ‘to-do list’. Bridal magazines sometimes have templates that help brides to draw up various checklists – from makeup trials to guest list and table arrangements – a lot of organizing was required. The biggest help to me was my husband. We had the same taste and similar vision. Working out our budget was of utmost priority. Only then can you actually decide on what you can splurge on and what you can do without. My husband played chauffeur as he would pick me up after work almost everyday as I would have made appointments to see various venues. I surfed the net for online forums to get recommendations for many things.

For my outfits, I wanted 2 dresses. The first dress for most of the night had to be unique. I wanted something that was a dress & yet had a classy Indian touch. I could not find anything that met my vision so I sourced for a saree at Stylemart, explained how I wanted it tailored and it resulted in a dress that was unique and something that I could keep forever. The other dress was also tailor-made by a boutique in Tanjong Pagar. I printed out designs that I liked and worked with the seamstress on the final dress. My bridesmaids also had their dresses tailor-made there. The owner was good in bringing out the best features of the girls. I sourced for their materials as I had a particular colour that I wanted the girls to wear. The best men had matching ties made as well. My husband also had his shirt and suit tailor-made.

As for my makeup artist, I was unable to find someone who met my standards. I was very disappointed after a few trials. However, since everyone I knew was telling me to do my own makeup, I decided to do just that! I was my own makeup artist. I had my hair done at my regular hair salon for only $30! Of course I told him exactly how I needed it and he made me happy with the results. An advise to all brides to be – collate pictures and photos from magazines and websites of all the things that you like so that it will be easy for you to explain your vision. This is helpful even for the venue and table decorations. I hired Anggerik Impian for my décor.

Be your own make up artist!

My husband & I were our own wedding planners and the entire experience was very eye-opening and enjoyable. The end-result was wonderful. Everyone had a blast and the partying lasted till 4am! It was a day we relish and fondly remember. 2 years later we had our traditional engagement, my bangle ceremony and traditional temple wedding. I engaged a freelance makeup artist for the temple wedding – aunty Vijaya who has years of experience in bridal makeup. She had the kind of jewellery that I wanted and listened to my every need.

Finally, a big thank you to my parents, husband, in-laws, family and friends who were my pillars of strength and support throughout the entire process. All of this would not have been possible without you guys! Heartfelt gratitude to all the MCs, DJs, Dancers, Singers & everyone else who played a part in making every single function a success.

Brides to be… Remember that preparing for a wedding is merely the beginning of preparing for a marriage.

Every gal wants to have just the perfect wedding that she’s dreamed about. Having recently gotten married, I was fortunate to have a brilliantly organized wedding in the presence of my lovely family and friends and I hope to be able to share this wonderful experience with future brides to be.

When we look back at it now, its funny how quickly the wedding ceremonies finished, especially since we had chalked up what seemed like endless months of taking care of the tiniest details, This once in a lifetime experience passes by in a flash but the key to building the most unforgettable memories in the biggest day of your life would be to start preparing early..

I was extremely lucky to have my sisters, Raksha and Chandni and my wedding planner, Ros, guide me throughout my bridal experience. Having been recently married herself, Raksha was able to provide me with amazing henna and make up contacts that helped me in my decision-making process. She also suggested the best designer boutiques in Bombay to get bridal shopping done from. My sisters were my pillars of strength and perfectly handled the sangeet program and numerous details throughout the wedding.

My wedding planner ensured that I was constantly updated with the latest international wedding trends. Rose was a blessing from heavens throughout the period of wedding preparations. She introduced me to the website Singapore Indian Brides (http://singaporeindianbrides.blogspot.com) and was my true inspiration. We shared addresses to get designer gowns, bridal magazines, photo shoots, guest books, etc, etc. She was always there for me whenever I had a “bridal call”, I hope the website will be as useful to future brides as it had been for me.

Every bride should have bridesmaids and a hair/make-up artist that truly make you feel special and enjoy every moment of your big day. I was fortunate to have my ten lovely bridesmaid (all dressed in gorgeous royal blue synchronized sarees), who were at my service 24/7, making me feel like an extraordinary princess as I reflect back on my wedding day.

"Soon after my boyfriend proposed to me, I started looking around for Bridal boutiques to do up my make up for my wedding. Being a member of the small local Sikh population, I soon discovered that there were only a few boutiques which could cater to the specialize needs off a Sikh wedding. Nonetheless, I checked out the few boutiques that I had come across and decided to enlist the services of Looks Bridal Boutiques. Several factors influenced my judgement.
From the very first time I stepped into Looks Bridal, it has given me a professional impression which I must say they have never failed to live up to. Some of the boutiques I stepped in felt as though they were still stuck in the 1970s. As they say, first impression counts.

Looks also had a very attractive package to offer. Unlike most of the other boutiques, Looks did the make up for my Wedding Day and Evening events with free trials thrown in for both. And the trials were not like the free trials some of my married friends went through where the boutique put some make up on you and verbally tell you what other stuff they will be doing on the actual day and in 15 minutes they show you out the doors. Here at looks I was told to bring along my wedding outfits, jewellery and any other accessories I had so that they could customize my make up. And this is the way I feel it should be and not how it is in some places where they only have a repertoire of a few templates and they expect your face and outfit to fit their template. Looks offered to arrange for me a photographer, videographer and a henna girl if I didn’t have any. I enlisted the services of the Looks henna girl and I am very glad I did as she did a really good job as you can see from the accompanying photos.

I also really liked the make up Bubbly did for my traditional wedding. As you can see from my pictures, I am all dolled up yet I have a natural look and not like an opera star as some brides end up looking. Quite often the bride is so made up that she doesn’t look like herself at all unlike here where I can recognize myself in the mirror.

Bubbly also gave me a lot of wedding related advice which she didn’t have to. Having seen a lot of marriages, Bubbly shared her experiences with me. What sort of jewellery would match my outfit best, where I can have customized costume jewellery made and preparing me for the complications I would be facing with my outfit were just some of the many valuable advices Bubbly had showered on me.

And when it came to pricing, I will just say one has to pay for quality and this is quality work and service I would gladly pay for anytime. Kudos Looks Bridal.

I once visited other beauty parlor to do threading and experience pain, since then I have some slight phobia in getting my eyebrow threaded. I walked in to D'Sparkling Touch one day wanting to have my eyebrow shaved instead. The beautician is able to do that as well. After a few times, the cozy and friendly ambience and the friendly staffs in the parlor encouraged me to engage their threading. With confidence, I tried.. and it is really good! The swift moves not only leave my brows a distinctive beautiful shape but I experienced no pain at all! Now, I'm back to them to do threading and only them!

As avid disciples of the DHOL drums, SDF play their own brand of Bhangra rhythms fused with world music, funk, afrobeat, local ethnic rhythms and whatever sounds these urban jungle dwellers devour and regurgitate. The extraordinary power and drive of this SDF at full throttle has been said to raise the spirits of the Punjab; many in the audience have said that they see them dancing in the air when the whole posse of SDF drummers are at full swing. "We first got to see Moses's work in 2006 and it was indeed a blessing! After watching one of his videos, we decided immediately that he was the one we were going to engage for our special day. He covered our big day in Jan 2007 as well as my bangle ceremony. He is a real gem to work with and he is open to discussion about our own ideas and preferences. He is extremely professional and states very clearly his terms and services. He also came very early for my bangle ceremony, much earlier than the time I requested he be there, and took all my pre-event video shots in a very professional and awesome way.

He was very re-assuring and made me feel extremely comfortable as he took my video shots. He made me feel very comfortable as it was my first time posing for these shots and I even felt like a celebrity. His video coverage is very natural and doesn't look overly posed. He also covered all the important parts of our big day to the best of his ability. He was also able to coordinate the entire video shoot very well and was able to get along with my family members and relatives. He was able to get everyone to work together and gave instructions very well and professionally. My mother always remembers him as the friendly video guy who was able to put a smile on everyone's face and made posing for video shots very fun and casual.

I still remember watching the unedited version of my wedding video and laughing at the way he got us to pose for shots as his jokes and encouragement were very endearing and warm! He also did a fantastic job editing and putting the video together. I espcially liked the way he was able to capture all the beautiful decor my brother painstakingly did for my wedding.
